The part of the chain that does the cutting is called the cutter. It is the one that must be filed to maintain its sharpness. Once the cutter has been worn down to a certain depth, it must be replaced. Chains have markers that can help you establish if it is time to replace it. The three main types of cutter teeth are the chipper, chisel, and semi-chisel. A chain has both right-hand and left-hand cutters.
The two of them ensure that the saw cuts evenly through the wood. It can tolerate dust and dirt better than the chisel cutter. You can file it with a file and guide. If you need a chin that cuts smoothly, you should consider the chipper cutter; it has a curved end view.
The semi-chisel is not as aggressive as the chisel type. A round file with a guide can be used to file it. It stays sharp for longer periods and tolerates dirt and dust better than any other two cutters. Though Hans Renold is credited with inventing the roller chain insketches by Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century show a chain with a roller bearing. There are two types of links alternating in the bush roller chain. The first type is inner links, having two inner plates held together by two sleeves or bushings upon which rotate two rollers. Inner links alternate with the second type, the outer links, consisting of two outer plates held together by pins passing through the bushings of the inner links.
The "bushingless" roller chain is similar in operation though not in construction; instead of separate bushings or sleeves holding the inner plates together, the plate has a tube stamped into it protruding from the hole which serves the same purpose.
This has the advantage of removing one step in assembly of the chain. The roller chain design reduces friction compared to simpler designs, resulting in higher efficiency and less wear. Some roller chains are designed to have o-rings built into the space between the outside link plate and the inside roller link plates. Chain manufacturers began to include this feature in after the application was invented by Joseph Montano while working for Whitney Chain of Hartford, Connecticut.

O-rings were included as a way to improve lubrication to the links of power transmission chains, a service that is vitally important to extending their working life.
These rubber fixtures form a barrier that holds factory applied lubricating grease inside the pin and bushing wear areas. Further, the rubber o-rings prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering inside the chain linkages, where such particles would otherwise cause significant wear.
There are also many chains that have to operate in dirty conditions, and for size or operational reasons cannot be sealed. Examples include chains on farm equipmentbicycles, and chain saws. These chains will necessarily have relatively high rates of wear, particularly when the operators are prepared to accept more friction, less efficiency, more noise and more frequent replacement as they neglect lubrication and adjustment.
Many oil-based lubricants attract dirt and other particles, eventually forming an abrasive paste that will compound wear on chains.This pretty well sums up what happens if you allow your chain to get dull. Performance will be severely hampered and blunt cutting equipment can not only cause you extra work but also be hazardous as it increases the chances of kickback. Modern chains used on homeowner saws are relatively inexpensive and some people might be tempted just to replace the chain or get it sharpened locally — but the costs can still add up.
The good news is that provided you have the right equipment which is reasonably inexpensivesharpening your own chains is something which you can easily learn.
It will also save you a great deal of money in the long run and keep your saw working at its optimum level. A slight note of caution is that sharpening a dull chain from normal use is relatively straightforward. On the other hand, if the chain has become dull because of damage caused by hitting dirt, rocks or other hard objects then you may need to get it sharpened professionally or alternatively invest in a replacement.
If you ever find yourself having to push your saw into the wood the chain is not sharp. There are also other signs that it is time to sharpen up and looking at the waste which comes from your cuts is a good starting place. If the waste is in the form of chips everything is fine. As you can see from the diagram above, there are both left and right cutters which are effectively the cutting teeth.
The left and right cutters alternate around the chain to keep the cutting straight. On the cutters there are semi-circular cutting edges and these have a specific diameter depending on the type of chain.
These are sharpened using a round file see next section. The depth gauge tip is a fraction shorter than the top of the cutter and after the cutter has been sharpened several times they can become the same level. This will prevent the saw from cutting so the depth gauges need to be lowered to the right height using a flat file and file guide.

When selecting chain, there are 3 basic considerations: grade metal tensile strengthdiameter thickness of chain and coil opening size.
A second concern is finish for corrosion resistance. Grade refers to the tensile strength of the metal. The grade number used by manufacturers is an indicator toward the ultimate break strength of chain.
The higher the grade the greater the break strength. With galvanized chain it basically boils down to how much carbon is in the steel. Grade 30, aka proof coil, has less carbon and is good service duty chain. Grade 43 aka Grade 40 has higher tensile strength and abrasion resistance and comes with a higher price tag. Proof coil, also known as Common Coil chain, is the standard commercial quality regularly stocked by hardware and industrial supply houses.
Proof coil is grade 30 chain, a general purpose chain for pulling or restraining applications. Proof coil is not for overhead lifting or where maximum tensile nor impact strength is crucial. Basic carbon steel metal composition makes it the go-to for log chains and towing.
This metal can look different depending on finish. Standard Finishes may be plain, colored, bright zinc or hot dip galvanized.
Because tolerances aren't as tight for inconsistencies in link size and diameter with proof coil, the cost is less than precision chain such as BBB for windlasses. Chain link openings vary, too. We offer chain with elongated link size called Long link.
